She got new tires for it, but the interior is in crappy condition, the paint looks awful, not much rust though. The steering pump and exhaust has issues, the cruise control doesn't work. 193k and she wants to do a 4WD to AWD swap.
How do I convince her that this car is just going to cause more headaches down the line and not worth the time/money on it?

that is a bit of a rare bird right there for sure. Not worth the money in that shape, but I always liked that bodystyle. If it was an XT turbo in that shape I would jump on it

Many years ago my cousin bought a Plymouth Laser (one of the Diamond Star cars) from a used car dealer. This thing had obviously been whacked pretty good; the passenger door didn't close properly, the front clip looked like it had been painted by Stevie Wonder (non-matching red with a major run in the paint). She had her dad come look at the car before signing the contract, and he didn't pick up on the obvious damage. She had her mind made up she was going to buy the car and wouldn't be dissuaded. No surprise, this car turned out to be a big POS with many problems over the 2 or 3 years she had it.
Moral of the story? You can't fix ______.

She loves this car. Why can't you respect that?

I do, I just think it's a terrible first car.

why try to dissuade her from all that learning she is going to do? Do you realize how much shit she will learn along the way. I wish more people were like that.

Eh, I'm a fan of bad ideas :)
If she's not cut out for it she'll soon realise. If she is, then kickass.

She's already emotionally invested in the car. She'll calm down soon and realize the swap will be too much. The steering pump and exhaust issues aside it has good bones. Do what you can to stay out of her way.
